Every AC quote you'll see includes a SEER2 number, and salespeople love waving it around. Here's what it actually means, what the law requires, and the honest math on when a higher number is worth your money in Florida.
SEER2 in one paragraph
SEER2 measures how much cooling a system delivers per unit of electricity across a season — think of it like miles-per-gallon for your AC. The '2' matters: in 2023 the test procedure got tougher (it now simulates realistic ductwork static pressure), so SEER2 numbers read slightly lower than old SEER for the same equipment. A 16 SEER2 system is roughly what a 17 SEER used to be.
What Florida requires
In the Southeast region, new residential systems under 45,000 BTU must be at least 14.3 SEER2. That's the 'Good' tier — perfectly legitimate equipment, and the right call for some homes and budgets.
When higher efficiency pays you back

The honest caveat
Efficiency ratings assume good installation. A 17 SEER2 system attached to leaky, undersized ducts performs like a much cheaper one.
