Repair or Replace Your AC? The Honest Math for Florida Homeowners

Repair or Replace Your AC? The Honest Math for Florida Homeowners
August 3, 2026 5 min readBy Ares Construction

Your AC died in July, the repair quote is $1,400, and the tech is hinting at a new system. Is that real advice or a sales pitch? Here's the honest framework we use — including when we tell people NOT to replace.

Start with the ×5,000 rule

Multiply the system's age by the repair cost. Under $5,000, repair is usually reasonable. Over $5,000, the math starts favoring replacement. A $400 capacitor on an 8-year-old system: 8 × 400 = 3,200 — fix it. A $1,400 compressor-adjacent repair on a 12-year-old system: 12 × 1,400 = 16,800 — that money is better spent on new equipment.

Why Florida systems age faster

  • Run hours: a Tampa Bay AC runs hard nine to ten months a year. A 10-year-old Florida system has the wear of a much older northern one.
  • Salt air: within a few miles of the coast, condenser coils corrode measurably faster.
  • Humidity load: our systems don't just cool, they wring gallons of water out of the air daily — extra duty northern units never see.

That's why the typical Florida system realistically gives 10 to 15 good years, and why we treat 10+ years old as the point where big repairs deserve real scrutiny.

When repair is clearly right

  • The system is under 8 years old and the fix is routine: capacitors, contactors, fan motors, drain clogs.
  • It's still under manufacturer parts warranty (register your equipment — it matters).
  • The repair is small and the system was properly sized and installed in the first place.

When replacement wins

  • Compressor or coil failure outside warranty — the two repairs that cost like a down payment on new equipment.
  • R-410A refrigerant leaks on older systems: the industry has moved to newer refrigerants, and topping off a leaker is renting time, not fixing anything.
  • Repeat repairs: the third truck roll in two summers is the system telling you something.
  • Power bills that keep climbing — a 10+ year old system can cost meaningfully more per month to run than a modern two-stage unit.
