Heat Pumps in Florida: Why They're the Default Here (and the Strip-Heat Bill Spike Explained)

Heat Pumps in Florida: Why They're the Default Here (and the Strip-Heat Bill Spike Explained)
July 3, 2026 4 min readBy Ares Construction

In northern states, 'should I get a heat pump?' is a debate. In Florida it barely is: our handful of heating nights and mild winters are exactly what heat pumps were born for. Here's the quick logic, and the one billing mystery worth understanding.

Heat pump vs 'AC plus strips'

Both options cool identically — a heat pump IS an air conditioner that can run in reverse. The difference is heating: a heat pump moves heat from outdoor air (efficiently, even on our 45° mornings), while a straight-cool system heats with electric resistance strips — basically a giant toaster, the most expensive heat money can buy. For the modest price difference at install time, the heat pump repays itself in a few cold snaps.

The January bill spike, explained

Most Florida heat pumps still include auxiliary strip heat as a backup for rapid recovery and rare deep cold. When your thermostat calls for a big temperature jump — say bumping 65 to 72 on a cold morning — it may engage the strips to get there fast, at several times the heat pump's operating cost. That's the mysterious 'AUX HEAT' and the bill that follows. The defense: raise setpoints gradually (1-2° at a time), or let a smart thermostat manage recovery — and make sure your installer configured the aux lockout sensibly.

Florida-specific buying notes

  • Sizing is still cooling-driven here: heating capacity comes along for the ride.
  • Coastal installs: spec coastal-rated coils/cabinets — the salt conversation applies to heat pumps identically.
  • Two-stage and variable-speed heat pumps bring the same humidity benefits in summer that make them our Better/Best tiers.

Nearly every system we quote in Tampa Bay is a heat pump for exactly these reasons — and if a straight-cool setup genuinely fits your case better, we'll say so.
