Impact Windows, Shutters, or Plywood: Protecting Florida Openings Without Overspending

Impact Windows, Shutters, or Plywood: Protecting Florida Openings Without Overspending

Here's the physics that changes how you think about windows: when a storm breaches an opening, wind enters and pressurizes the house like a balloon — and the roof, pushed from below and pulled from above, is what gives. Opening protection isn't about glass; it's about keeping your roof on.

Start with the garage door

The largest, weakest opening on most homes, and a leading cause of catastrophic pressurization failures. If budget allows exactly one upgrade, a wind-rated garage door (or reinforcement bracing for an existing one) is frequently the highest-value dollar in storm hardening — and it earns wind-mitigation insurance credit.

The protection hierarchy

  1. Impact-rated windows and doors: always protected, zero deployment effort, everyday bonuses (security, noise, UV), and the strongest insurance discounts. Highest upfront cost — usually best value during remodels or when windows are due anyway.
  2. Accordion/roll-down shutters: permanently mounted, deploy in minutes, strong protection at meaningful savings versus impact glass. The right answer for many owners who'll actually be home to close them.
  3. Removable panels (metal/polycarbonate): code-approved and affordable, but honesty required — they only work if installed before every storm, which means ladders, labor, and storage. The panels stacked in garages that never go up protect nothing.
  4. Plywood: better than nothing, if properly sized and anchored — and a last resort, not a plan.

The insurance angle

Opening protection is a wind-mitigation inspection category: documented, code-rated protection on ALL openings earns premium credits that chip away at the upgrade cost every single year. Partial protection typically earns nothing — the discount logic is all-or-none, which should shape your phasing.

As a licensed GC we handle opening protection as part of whole-envelope work — windows, doors, garage doors, and the roof they're all protecting, engineered together.

Want the envelope look? Free assessment covers roof, openings, and the wind-mit discounts you're leaving on the table.
