On a 92° Tampa Bay afternoon, an under-ventilated attic can sit north of 140°. That heat radiates straight down through your ceiling insulation and bakes your shingles from below — so your AC runs harder AND your roof dies younger. Ventilation is the unglamorous fix for both.
How it's supposed to work
Cooler air enters low through soffit vents, warms, rises, and exits high through ridge or off-ridge vents — continuous passive airflow, no electricity required. The system fails when either end is missing or blocked: painted-over soffits, insulation stuffed into the eaves, or a roof with exhaust vents but starved intakes.
Signs yours is failing
- ▸Upstairs rooms that never cool down, or an AC that runs continuously on summer afternoons.
- ▸Shingles aging fast — curling, oil-bleed, granule loss — especially compared to neighbors.
- ▸A blast-furnace attic within an hour of sunrise, or moisture/mildew smell up there in summer.
- ▸AC ductwork in the attic (most Florida homes): every degree of attic heat you remove is heat your ducts don't absorb.
The fixes, cheapest first
- Clear the intakes: baffles at the eaves keep insulation from choking soffit vents — often the whole problem.
- Balance the system: intake area should roughly match exhaust; we calculate it rather than guessing.
- Add ridge venting at reroof time: the marginal cost during a replacement is small, and it's the best-looking exhaust option.
- Radiant barrier decking at reroof: reflects a large share of radiant heat before it enters the attic — a Florida-specific upgrade that pairs beautifully with good airflow.
