Is Solar Worth It in Tampa Bay in 2026? Roof-by-Roof Honesty

Solar in Florida is either a great investment or a mediocre one — and the difference is your specific roof, not the sales pitch. Here are the variables that actually decide it, and a way to check your own numbers without talking to anyone.

The variables that matter

  • Your roof's sun: orientation, pitch, and shade. A south-facing, unshaded Tampa Bay roof gets roughly 1,700+ hours of usable sun a year; heavy oak shade can cut production dramatically.
  • Your bill: solar offsets what you use. A $250/month household has far more to gain than a $90 one.
  • Roof age: panels last 25+ years — putting them on a roof with 5 years left means paying to remove and reinstall them mid-life. (As roofers AND solar installers, we solve this in one project.)
  • Utility rates: every rate increase makes the electricity your roof produces worth more.

What Florida actually gives you

  • Property tax exemption: adding solar raises your home's value, and Florida exempts 100% of that added value from property tax.
  • Sales tax exemption: solar equipment is exempt from Florida sales tax.
  • Net metering: Florida's investor-owned utilities credit exported energy — the rules and rates get revisited periodically, so we confirm the current program details for your utility during the assessment rather than promising yesterday's terms.

On federal incentives: the rules have changed more than once recently, and plenty of online calculators still show outdated numbers. We'd rather confirm what applies to you at assessment time than publish a figure that expires.

The ballpark math

Installed residential solar typically runs a few dollars per watt — a common 8-12 kW Tampa Bay system lands in the $20,000-$35,000 range before incentives, offsetting most or all of a typical bill. Whether that's a good deal depends entirely on the variables above, which is why generic 'solar pays for itself in X years' claims are noise.
